This is my 3rd Acer Chromebook. Truly, you can't beat it for the price. I'm NOT technically inclined ~ the simpler the better. i use it for personal correspondence but it offers so much more. It's super simple to set up. The only difficulty I've had is transferring my downloaded photos from my other computer. Simply because I don't know how. That will require help from my kids.

I have used Chromebooks for business for the last 10 years or so and this one does not disappoint. As described it starts up fast and quickly jumps online. I have used this brand before with no problems. In fact, I have had 2 other Chromebooks and used until they were no longer supported by Google. I like having everything available online. It immediately accessed my files and links with log-in and password information intact. My previous Chromebook had a larger screen, but oddly, I prefer the smaller one for better portability. I am well pleased and plan on using this until expires in another 5 years or so! I certainly do not miss the slow boot-ups and file updates of a PC.

I have a desk top and a larger Chromebook. This smaller one goes with me everywhere. It is so lightweight that I can put it in a tote bag and have it on hand when I need it. It's easy to use and when watching videos, the picture is fantastic. (My cat loves watching bird videos on it, too.) I bought this on a whim because of the low price, but would buy it again because it is such a good product.

I purchased this device for my son, for college. It’s perfect for his needs. He writes papers, does research, even has several windows open at a time, with no slow down in performance.

So far, it’s reliable, it’s fast, it’s easy to use. Neither my son nor I have any complaints. He’s actually surprised at how well it’s working for him. I’m well pleased.

For the price it is a good bedroom computer. I can watch Amazon Video or catch up on other things.
The screen is great, my eyes feel comfortable looking at it.

The only thing that is a minor grip is the spacebar. It is really stiff. It works and you have to tap the top of it if you want to ensure that it does work. Maybe with more use it will adjust itself. If you are doing a lot of typing on it this could be an issue. But I'm usually doing other things so for me it is a keeper.

It's cheap, easy, small, and it does what I need it to do. You want to browse the web and do word processing? This is your machine, nothing spectacular, but it doesn't need to be. This is your 'extra' laptop, the one you set in a room you don't use often or take with you somewhere because it doesn't matter if it breaks or not. I'd say get it if you find that useful.

4.0 out of 5 stars As an overall package, this is a great basic Chromebook laptop
Reviewed in the United States ???? on July 7, 2022
Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
Initial set-up:

You're looking at approximately 8 minutes to get this laptop up and running the first time you use it. You'll need to do a bit of updating of software, email sign in, and a few other small tasks.

Boot up time:

Compared to my nicer Chromebooks, this boots up a bit slower, but it's substantially faster than a typical laptop of course. Bank on a few minutes or slightly less.

Browsing speed:

Very quick if you're connection is solid.

Streaming:

Very little to no lag as long as your connection is strong.

Multi-tasking:

Good for a Celeron processor based Chromebook. Unless you have 10+ pages running simultaneously, and steaming, you'll be fine.

Battery life:

Very good. My niece averages around 5% better battery life than listed.

Who's this for:

This Chromebook is going to work best for those who just want to browse and stream. With that said, you can do a little editing with this laptop, and some work, depending on whether it's Chromebook friendly work.

Bottom line:

4 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars Durable design, 3:2 aspect ratio, USB C Power Delivery and video out (DP alt mode)
Reviewed in the United States ???? on March 23, 2022
Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
This Chromebook from Acer surprised me with how well it's made for less than $170, I wasn't expecting it to be this good. It has a few shortcomings but it's hard for me to really complain for the price. Some Chrome OS devices on the market are older and already several years into their supported lifespan, which is usually 5 years. This one is at the very beginning of that window, it will get updates until June 2027. This is not something people think about but it is important for having an up-to-date and secure device.

So the two things that this Chromebook has as its selling points is a 3:2 aspect ratio and a durable design, specifically: MIL-STD 810G, which is a like a certification that means it's strong enough to withstand being dropped. With this laptop, it also is supposed to mean that it's ok if liquid spills on the keyboard, but it doesn't seem to have a proper IPX7 rating.

The internal specs are pretty standard for an entry level chromebook, you get a dual core Intel Celeron N4020(@1.1GHz) paired with 4GB of LPDDR4, with 32GB of eMMC storage. It's not super powerful, but it doesn't need to be in order to run Chrome OS well, and feel nice and responsive browsing the web or running Android apps from the Play Store. The port selection is better though, you get 2x USB C 3.2 gen 1 (5Gbps) and 2x USB A ports with the same speed for data transfer. There is also a Micro SD card reader, headphone jack, and a Kensington lock slot. You can charge it using either USB C port (at 45 watts via Power Delivery), both of which also support video output using DisplayPort Alternate mode.

The screen is a real IPS LCD, not the cheaper TN type of panels that you can find on Chromebooks that cost even more than this one does. It looks fine, it has an HD+ resolution, it's basically 720p with a few more pixels to give you the 3:2, taller aspect ratio. It does have kind of chunky bezels for 2022, but generally speaking, I think this is a good looking laptop. One thing that I found strange was that the screen is not a touchscreen, which most Chromebooks have this feature. It might be a consequence of having a more durable design or something that was left out because of the low cost of the device. The speakers are serviceable, they get loud enough and sound fine. I watched a movie on here and it didn't sound amazing or anything, but I have heard worse speakers on $400-$500 laptops. I think most people with be happy with them, given the price point.

Keyboard and trackpad are good, except for not being backlit. It can be kind of hard to see in dimly lit rooms, even if it has white letters against black keycaps. The typing experience is good, I'm writing this review using the chromebook. The trackpad is above average, sometimes I really get frustrated with cheaper laptops and their trackpads but this one is good.

I think that this is a good option for anyone who needs a laptop for web-based tasks and can't afford a full blown Windows 11 computer. I honestly think that the average person is better served by getting an iPad or a Chromebook than they are with a Windows PC (assuming that their budget is $300-$400 or less). Windows PCs require upkeep and all of the desktop apps have to be updated individually, if something goes wrong then it's harder to fix than an iPad or Chromebook. Which of the two a person should get depends on what kind of smartphone they have, people with Android phones will get more out of a Chromebook. Just like iPhone owners will get more out of an iPad, because of the way the devices work together.

You can sync up your Android device with this Chromebook and receive your phone's notifications on the laptop. You can also trigger it to stay unlocked as long as two devices are close to each other and on the same network. With Nearby Sharing, you can wirelessly share links, photos, videos etc from the phone to the laptop or the other way around. I am really glad that Google finally released an equivalent to Airdrop. Unfortunately though, if you have an iPhone, you won't be able to take advantage of what I just described.

Pros+

3:2 aspect ratio gives you additional vertical screen real estate, better for productivity

Excellent build quality, much more durable than an average Chromebook

IPS LCD display looks way better than cheaper TN LCD screens

Power Delivery USB C charging (you can plug the power cable into either side of the laptop)

Video output from either USB C port

Very Affordable

Cons-

Big bezels around the screen

Keyboard is not backlit

No touchscreen

For the price this is a good solid unit for any student who lives in the google sphere for school, or for the grandparent's email and other online needs. It's a Chromebook so it performs like one, but this one is especially snappier than most and the durability is MIL std, so you can be assured it will take one heck of a beating. So far, I've dropped it twice with no problems lol.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Chromebook if you have destructive toddlers
Reviewed in the United States ???? on March 18, 2022
Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
I bought an Acer laptop in 2014 because my last laptop broke due to one of my toddlers stepping on it. So I knew I needed an unbreakable, durable laptop, and Acer came to the rescue. At that time, I pay around $280 for a 1 TB ROM with 4 GB RAM, 11.6 inch touchscreen. In comparison, this newer Chromebook by Acer boasts similar unbreakable and drop resistant material, also waits more heavily compared to other Chromebooks, has similar 4 GB RAM but only 32 GB ROM. All of this for $200, non touchscreen (full specs Acer Chromebook 512 | Intel Celeron N4020 Processor | 12" HD+ Display | Intel UHD Graphics 600 | 4GB LPDDR4 | 32GB eMMC | Intel 9560 802.11ac Gigabit WiFi 5 | MIL-STD 810G | Chrome OS | CB512-C1KJ).

Aside from it having a little bit bigger screen, if similar specs were given to my older Acer, I would totally choose that instead. Know that a Chromebook cannot download software like Microsoft word or even Adobe, and have two exclusively rely on Google word application, which means Wi-Fi is always required. Keeping all that in mind, I just really love that I found another equivalently durable laptop. I just wish it's a bit lighter. This is a great, fairly inexpensive Chromebook for those like myself who have destructive toddlers.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ironic purchase
Reviewed in the United States ???? on October 23, 2022
Overall, a great laptop for the price, and does exactly what I bought it for. (Please see update below.)

The thing I found puzzling and quite funny, is that although I purchased this on Amazon Shopping, the Amazon Shopping app isn’t available for it.

We live in interesting times.

Okay, update. Turns out it DOESN’T do what I need it to. I need it to scroll. The scroll bar has completely disappeared except for a microsecond when enlarging/minimizing the screen. If you try to use it, it gives you the sideways arrow, but no scroll bar. All it will do is highlight all the text. It has been updated. Who the heck creates a computer that only allows access to the top parts of pages?!?! And Google “Help”? Useless.

Final opinion: Do NOT, under ANY circumstances purchase this steaming piece of crap. If someone is holding a gun to your head trying to force you to buy this, opt for the bullet. It will be less painful in the end, and save you a ton of frustration. Google should be ashamed. Seriously, how do they justify even charging for this?

Google Chrome: Here is a totally useless piece of junk. Now give us money for it.

Don’t do it. Seriously. Just don’t. Boo!!! Hiss!!!
