5.0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Gaming Laptop A+ Honest real review after 2 days of using.

Well after my Dell Gaming G3 Laptop finally came to its end after 4 1/2 years of owning it I have been looking around for another laptop, but this time I wanted 16 megs of ram since my old Dell G3 only had 8 megs of ram

I have been using this new Acer Nitro 5 Laptop for a few days now and I am exceptionally pleased with this laptop in performance and also how fast it boots up which was around 5-8 seconds for me.

If your considering putting out the money for this Laptop I do highly recommend this Laptop over the Dell Gaming Laptops and likely others. I just hope this laptop holds up over the years. Personally I use this Laptop for making money doing surveys for cash and passive income stuff online, but I also enjoy the gaming aspect this laptop offers. I most certainly want to have the laptop pay for itself overtime doing online income side things for cash and this laptop holds up quite well for playing a game and doing passive income generation stuff online which is why I wanted at least 16 megs of ram for multi tasking.

So in conclusion if your shopping for a good gaming laptop, I think you'll be exceptionally pleased with this great laptop as I have found it to be lighter on your legs at 17.3 vs the G3 17.3 Dell Gaming laptop which is a good thing.

The small thing I am trying to get used to is the location of where you place the power plug which is directly behind the latop in the middle and it takes a little harder press so it locks in so make sure to do that before thinking you have a laptop that won't turn on.

I am used to using laptops with the power cord on the side of a laptop, but it is not a deal breaker. Also if your looking to earn cash online to help pay for your new laptop just type in my name on youtube as I share a lot of information about methods to earn money doing surveys for cash with tutorials and all. You can look me up on youtube as Ronnie Branch. Take care and enjoy your new gaming laptop if you decide to get it as I do highly recommend this gaming laptop. I plan to buy a 2nd laptop being the other version probably the Acer 5 aspire later in the future with at least 16 megs of ram also.

I spent a while deciding on a lower end gaming machine to get after growing weary of PSN offerings over the last few years. Have been a console player on PSN for 27 years and wanted a good machine to start my PC adventures again. For PC Gaming you have to have good gear. And man can this machine deliver! It boots up and shuts down in about 5-7 seconds and flys through games and apps. I'm running Xbox live, Steam, Epic games with no issues.

The keyboard is nice, one of the reasons I picked this machine, very comfortable to use hours on end. Fans are loud, as most of these gaming machines are, but really not too bad...I don't ever really notice them while I'm playing. I run my HDMI out to a 4K gaming monitor and it runs great. Some people complain about the touch pad, but I never use it....using the Nitro gaming mouse and love it. I like the thin bezel screen design, keeping those red LED's on my keyboard. Some gaming laptops do not have a good keyboard layout...this one is nice.

I also can confirm this works with Meta Quest 2 with a link cable (to a decent degree). Some low end gaming laptops do not even have a USB 3.0 port, this one does. Don't expect this machine to work great on all VR games and it takes a bit of tweaking to get your system running smooth, I did have some issues with a couple Steam VR games. But I can confirm it works reasonably well with VR Pokerstars and PopOne is playable (I still prefer wireless for that as there is not a real advantage in using link cable, but it was a great test on framerate and playability). I will be trying more VR games eventually. You do have to optimize this laptop a bit but not too much to do , trim down the fat. But it is fun exploring what this machine can do with VR games.

Some tips:
I HIGHLY recommend getting another Ram stick, 16Gig min. (I'm running 16 Gig and always have 4-8 Gigs free) . At 8 Gigs it's just not enough. I also highly recommend getting a larger SSD card (just add on) as these games do take up space quickly. I dropped in a 1 TB card so I am at 1.2 TB now. Taking the back cover off was not really too hard, once you take the screws off and pop off the first latch, just be careful as this case is plastic.

I use an adjustable metal laptop stand and have the back raised 3 or 4 inches to keep the air flow underneath good (lowered down a bit) , after a couple months of use it seems to work well and gives me a comfortable angle to use the keyboard.

5.0 out of 5 stars I may be biased

I may be biased or underqualified.... as my laptop I am upgrading from is 8 years old and was not a gaming laptop. This thing rocks! Definitely a massive upgrade from my Dell Vostro 3558 with a Intell 5500 UHD graphics card (a pretend graphics card).

I don't play super graphically intense games. I really only play Lague of Legends, and do a lot of computer work for school and hospital work. This was such an upgrade!

League was getting pretty glitchy, slow and annoying on my old laptop... even on the lowest settings. However, I can run LOL on this thing on the highest video settings LIKE A CHAMP! This laptop has performed amazingly in the past week. I hope it holds up well like my Dell did. That thing served me so well, and I hope its good work rubs off onto this laptop, too.

That said... LOL does make the fans on this run at around (my guess) 60-70% speed compared to the max that I have heard them run at during my own testing, but I believe that more graphically intense games would be fine.... for the non-pro-elite-super-ridiculously meticulous-must catch em all-gamer

**** note**** I weighed my values and needs.... I was fine having only the RTX 3050 and not the 3050 Ti.... because the difference was so minimal that I would have never used or appreciated the difference. The difference in CPU's between the Intel i5 5200H and the i7-107200H or whatever it was, was not something I would ever notice or appreciate. I don't need any additional storage because I keep everything on cloud servers. I bought an extra 8GB RAM card for $24 and installed it in 5 minutes in this baby. Can't beat it.

The Acer Nitro's are known for being easily upgradeable.... I gotta agree... it was easy to open it up and plug in new stuff. This thing has lots of connections for more SSD storage if you need it.

I AM HAPPY. Enough said. I will buy another laptop in another 4-5 years and I hope this one continues to serve someone even after that. Good stuff... good stuff man.

Definitely Best Budget Laptop of 2022! The I-5 10 Series is a video editing and gaming killer! ??
Great hardware to get you in to the 2020's!
I've use Devinci Resolve 18 (Free) to edit my GoPro 9 and Sony FDR-X3000 vloggs. It even handles 4k editing which is expected with this powerful processor! 8GB RAM is decent but i put anotger 8GB into the machine, which was really easy to assemble and disassemble.
1080p editing is breeze! ????
I also have Steam and a few games like War Thunder and I'm able to play with 60fps, easy, high graphics on every setting, no problem.
I don't play the newest top notch games but this could handle it, unlike some other commebts kinda under dogging this machine.
I boosted the storage with an extra 1TB M.2 Samsung SSD (amazon) for the extra storage capacity.
PC fan run while plugged in can be a tad loud, nothing you have to talk over, graphics these days arnt Galaga, almost everything use CPU and RAM, best thing to do, make sure your ram and extra sroage have heatsink. Get a laptop stand but never run the extra fan. Just packs extra dust into the machine. I have one just as a base for better bresthing of my own laptop.
The keyboard is also quite nice. I don't mind the short stokes, my fingers glade across like a gizzle.
Just make sure to lower the keyboard brightness (helps with battery)
Windows 11 isn't bad either, they did it right, has a Mac-ish feel, i like it. Quick and snappy!
Win 11 also comes with a video editor as well which now lets you edit 1080p videos for free!
Another Mac move ?? Which is fine! Not complaining!
The computer is super snappy, it's got a badass look to it, it's not heavy by any means! It's a low profile, not flat, it needs room for fans ect..
The battery great as long as you follow my settings advice.
And think of this laptop like a manual car, you have to change settings constantly. If your just browsing on battery they have to be set one way. If your about to get on some video editing then set the other
I'm very please, with extra parts my total was $967.
Absolutely love my new Acer Nitro 5!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value Gaming Laptop
Reviewed in the United States ???? on May 6, 2022

Good sub-$1000 gaming laptops are hard to find, but The Nitro 5 gives great value without breaking the bank. The 10th Gen Core i5 processor is 2 generations old at this point, but it has plenty of power to run pretty much all modern games at a decent setting. The Nvidia RTX 3050 graphics processor is an entry level to the new Ray-Tracing sexiness that's the next big thing in graphics. On newer games you probably won't be able to get past the 60fps barrier at 1080p with the settings cranked, but dialing the details down a bit will give you better rates. The display is rated for 1080p and 144hz, and while it's not the brightest or most vibrant screen out there, it's fine for this price point. There is also a (full size) HDMI out, but I have not had occasion to connect this to an external monitor yet. The cooling fans do a good job of keeping this machine within temp specs... but do note they can get pretty loud under load (honestly that's almost inevitable on a gaming laptop, it's hard to keep things cool in such a small box. Anyone who games on a laptop should invest in a good headset IMHO.)

I have opened this computer up to install a few upgrades (more on that below) and I will say I'm pretty impressed with the build quality for a computer in this segment. The components are reputable makes rather than mystery off-brands (WD for the SSD, looks like Micron on the single 8gb RAM stick.) All the panels fit together nice and go back together easily after disassembly, making upgrades something you don't have to dread.

Speaking of those upgrades... for a computer at this price point you have to live with a few compromises and here is where they may be found. The storage this model comes with is a paltry 256gb m.2 drive... If you do plan on gaming on the Nitro, either be ready to upgrade this quickly or learn to love delete-ing and re-installing games and apps constantly. Fortunately, there is a second un-used m.2 PCIe slot on the motherboard to accommodate an upgrade (this processor and motherboard supports PCIe up to gen-3 speeds.) There is also an open 2.5 inch bay for an SSD. Memory-wise, this unit comes with a single 8gb DDR4 SODIMM RAM stick installed. This should be fine for most gaming- if you don't run big apps in the background- but since this has two slots total for an upgrade I removed it and installed 2 8gb sticks of Kingston FURY Impact DDR4 RAM, just for a bit of extra headroom (the max speed the i5 10300H will operate memory at is 2933 Mhz, so it's not worth it to spend more on faster RAM.)

All in all, this is a fine machine for someone who's interested in a good no-fuss entryway into PC gaming, or a seasoned gamer who wants an inexpensive but capable machine to go mobile with. Highly Recommended!

UPDATE (22 March 2022):
New unit arrived yesterday and started up perfectly.

As for a laptop, it's perfectly functional. The design is nice, the keyboard feels nice (trackpad takes some getting used to clicking), there are enough ports for the peripherals I use, and it's run older games for 5 hours straight with negligible heat. I haven't tested the webcam and microphone yet.

I don't play new or graphic-intensive games, but this ran very well on older games (Team Fortress 2, Spec Ops: The Line, Magic the Gathering 2014) and some newer ones (Deep Rock Galactic). I plan to run Halo Infinite and Outer Wilds later this week and expect it to perform well.

I will keep this updated as my time with this computer progresses. 5/5

OLD REVIEW (20 March 2022):

TL;DR - I'm sure the laptop is great but the one I received is defective (can't charge - motherboard issue). I am returning it to Amazon and have ordered another one, as I'm sure a functioning unit will meet my expectations for this product. I will update my review when my second order arrives. As for now, 1 star for defective product.

I wanted a budget gaming laptop to replace my retired ASUS G55VW (2011). I chose this model due to its strong specs for a budget device, including an RTX 3050Ti (midrange for graphics cards in 2021 but supports the burgeoning ray-tracing technology used in current games), Core i7 CPU, 1 TB SSD storage, and 16GB memory. I also chose this because I wanted a 17-inch screen. The price point maxed out my acceptable budget range (~$1200).

I believe this laptop is a good choice for me considering these specs and the price, and I look forward to trying it out.

HOWEVER, the model I received appears to be defective - I believe I got a lemon. Upon unboxing, plugging the charger into the laptop did not illuminate the 'charging' light on the laptop, even after trying different electrical outlets and surge protectors. I took it to a local computer repair shop and the tech confirmed the charger itself was functional, as his voltmeter reported 19+ V. Upon opening the device and testing it, he concluded that something was wrong with the motherboard that prevented charging (I am unfamiliar with computers and cannot relay the significance of what he said).

I filed for a return-and-replace with Amazon; they accepted the return but denied the replacement - likely so I couldn't keep both laptops and run. The laptop is currently repackaged and I will drop it off at UPS for a return in the next couple of days.

I immediately ordered another unit, as this model was my first choice. I expect the second product to work just fine and meet my purchasing expectations, and eagerly await its arrival. I understand defective products are produced and shipped as a natural part of the production process, and do not consider this representative of Acer.

While I'm sure the product will meet my expectations, I am saddened to receive a defective model. I will provide an updated review when my second order arrives.

I run plenty of games through this thing with all my other tabs open in browsers and this thing has no issues. Have had it for 6+ months and don’t really have any complaints. I wish the GPU was a bit more powerful for games like COD but overall hitting 100+ fps in all titles is relatively easy at the lower end of graphic settings.

So I've had my Acer for almost a year now and here are my thoughts, struggles, FYIs for those thinking on getting one.

First big thing is RAM 8gb is a very small amount and if you're planning on any sort of heavy gaming beyond some old titles or mmo you'll want to upgrade it (great thing is though that it's easy enough to swap out).

Second is battery when I was still deciding on buying or not there was a few reviews mentioning a possible battery issue where it it will start losing its charge and having to swap it and sure enough after a few months I saw my battery slowly but surely losing its charge and decided to order a replacement. Now as I was waiting for it I lost power for some hours mid gaming and chose to just run the battery out until it came back after draining it and the power got back on for charging the battery issue was gone which while great was a bit frustrating having to go through a return for the replacement battery.

Lastly temperature it can get fairly warm so I'd recommend getting a cooling pad if anything for longevity especially if you're like me and plan on using it for years to come.

Outside of those couple things it's been perfect for me especially for an under 1k laptop.

I loved this Laptop before replacing it with my newest one I bought at a Black Friday discount of only $1000, the Asus A15, RTX 3050Ti, Ryzen 7, upgraded 6800H/ 32GB RAM 1TB SSD). If your not wanting Ryzen but Intel 7 instead, than I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND this Acer Nitro 5 Gaming Laptop. I attached a picture of the red keyboard as this was one of the many features I loved most about the Acer 17.6" Laptop. I would give it an overall rating of about 4.8 Stars since the one I have now cost around the same price but comes with FULL RBG functionality, and 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and both are expandable.(See my review on the Asus A15, April 2022 Model here on Amazon, or YouTube. I do alot of reviews by choice, and in order to help others know what it is they might be investing their hard earn dollars into. I think all reviews should be 100% honest and straight forward, but unfortunately there are some who might bock at this; I don't let that stop my being open and honest though. So yeah, I would recommend this Acer model if your not into Asus or are on a tighter budget as I myself am on.

Only thing I did not like about this is the left/right mouse click buttons, there are not any, they are built into the touch pad and if you move your finger at all when you push down the pointer moves off the target on the screen. Also unless you are on the very left or right of the pad when you click you don't know if your going to get a left or right click.

17in display (diagonally) that is not touch screen...love that.

GPU and screen work together to crank out 144 frames per second. Played a bunch of Hades to confirm that.

Windows 11 out of the box. Got rid of most of the bloatware immediately.

For the price, I would've wanted full RGB back-lit keyboard. I like red, but this was a missed opportunity. There is a USB 3.1 or 3.2 port that doesn't work very well. Even connecting my phone for just charging would reset its connection randomly every 2-5 minutes.

I got this as a gaming rig on the go. It might be able to be your primary machine if you're into laptops.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Power cord has 2 clicks before it is fully plugged in. Not sure why they did this, but please be aware you need to push the charger ALL THE WAY IN and get 2 clicks from it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Entry Level Gaming Computer (Detailed)
Reviewed in the United States ???? on January 5, 2022

Detailed First Impression Review

I’ve been on Xbox for a long time for gaming and wanted to see the hype behind PC gaming. I do many things with my computer that a desktop would not work for me, as I have to move it around frequently and like portability, so I explored into the gaming laptop world. This was a cheaper, yet good option for an entry level Device.

Processor- I bought the i7-11800H model and this processor seems to be a bit overkill for even some higher end games. But it’s great to have that extra power to multitask as well. I have not had any issues with the processing power. It’s fast and smooth.

Graphics- I’m using the RTX-3050Ti and I’ve seen the card likes to run at 100% nearly all the time when in a game but I have had no issues with its capability of running smoothly and not overheating, and I haven’t even tried any undervolting yet which could improve it more.

RAM- the 16gb ram and 4gb vram work well together. I use the heavily graphic related game of BeamNG Drive that requires a lot of RAM to run smooth and have tried several multiplayer games and have never seen the RAM get over 70% (which is pretty good for heavily demanding games). This was Plenty of RAM for the gaming I do to keep it running smooth.

Overall- this is a great starting laptop for anyone looking for a gaming laptop or something fast for multitasking. Sure there might be a couple other options with similar price ranges that might perform slightly better. But this one was the lowest price I saw for what you get out of it and it’s been working just fine for me. I haven’t had it long so I may be back to update this if my opinion changes lol. But first impressions were really good.

Negatives- the graphics card works really great as mentioned above, but if you use it running at 100% for a couple hours you can completely notice a performance drop because the temperature starts to get too hot. I haven’t had it overheat but I have had some slight performance differences after a while of hard use. That’s really the only “issue”, that’s not a huge deal, that I’ve had. And it’s correctable by changing up some deeper settings.

As I have mentioned, this is a great ENTRY Level laptop. I would not recommend this laptop to anyone that is heavily into gaming. It works great for what I want to do with it but it would work pretty bad for a professional gamer (not that pros would ever use a laptop for gaming lol). I am also newer to PC gaming but I’m pretty savvy with computers. So being able to change some settings that the average newer user wouldn’t know how to, without YouTube tutorials, have made this laptop perform a little better than out of the box. But these changes I made so far are all settings included on the computer, not third party software included in this review (meaning anyone can change the basic settings to improve the performance slightly as I have).

PS- I thought I had a dead laptop when it came like other reviewers complained about. I read the review of one person that said you have to jam the power plug in there really good til it clicks for it to work. I initially thought I pushed hard enough and heard a light snapping sound, but it wouldn’t charge or turn on. So I pushed a lot harder and heard it click a lot louder and it started charging perfectly fine and started up right away.

Keep expectations realistic do your research for what kind of games your gonna play how this hardware stacks up to running sed games and your gonna have a good time and be happy with your buy. The only ball drop by Microsoft or Acer was i had to download some additional C++ code to get some games running how they should. I play fighting games and this laptop suits my needs and runs the games without issue should also be enough to handle street fighter 6 with no issues playing more demanding games performance may decline. You also need to understand you absolutely will not be gaming without being plugged into the charger you will just gimp the component's if you don't play plugged into a outlet and have a bad time. Make sure you set up the PC to optimize performance and take full advantage of its dedicated nividia card and intel processor the ram can be upgraded but i would only put 16gigs in max the 8 gig stick is okay. The native 144hz screen is impressive for the price this laptop costs all in all if you know what your doing and know how games will run on the hardware that you want to play you will be happy with the buy. Understand this all depends on the type of games you want the hardware to play and what those games will be asking the system to preform i cant stress that fact enough please do your research before you buy that means you parents of children google and youtube are your friend when it comes to this.

I don't do a lot of heavy gaming, so I wanted to buy a low-level gaming laptop because I knew it would do everything I needed to do. For context, the main games I play on my laptop are The Sims (with a ton of cc and a few mods), Stardew Valley (with a fair amount of mods), Terraria, and then basic in-browser games like tetris and whatever else when I'm truly bored. For the most part, this computer has handled running them all super well. Surprisingly, it has the most difficulty with the in-browser games, which tend to lag or drop frames. To be fair, I don't really know why Mahjongg 3D needs to be rendered in such intense detail anyway, but whatever.

I don't have a lot of complaints about this computer. It does what I needed it to do. A couple of times I've had to reset my settings because my built-in microphone will randomly turn itself completely off. Also, sometimes, when I'm switching tabs or something, my screen will just go black for a second or two. That's the biggest complaint. If I needed to use this machine to play Valorant or Fortnite or whatever, a few seconds of a black screen could cost me the game. However, I'm still satisfied with all that I'm able to do using this computer, especially considering the price. I've been using the same old computer for ages because every subsequent computer has just been too slow for me. I'm happy to say that this is not the case with this computer, and as long as it runs decently and lets me play The Sims and watch Netflix, I probably will stay pretty happy.

I've only had this for a day now, so I can't speak to longevity. All in all I'm pleased with this laptop. It's lightweight but packs a punch still. Set up and updating was quick and easy. It's a great utilization of space, only a slim border around the screen and keyboard.

A few first impression negatives: you can see in other review images that it comes with 5 semi permanent stickers, (Nvidia, Intel, Alexa, 144hz, and a long feature banner). That was a bummer because they weren't in the product image, and they look awful (not to mention some were crooked). Thankfully they're removable, though I had to use glass cleaner to get rid of residue from one. Not a big deal though. The frame is very lightweight and flexible. The feet keep it raised which is good for cooling, but any pressure on the middle makes it flex, which I don't love. It's not going to crumble, but it's definitely a step down from my Lenovo with a metal body. You're paying for the internal components, not the frame.

So on the first shutdown i selected the "update and shutdown" option. The next day on Startup i was stuck in the "Nitro 5 bluescreen loop" just google it. And i had to basically wipe the HD and start over. This is pretty embarrassing for Acer. The second major issue that sticks out to me is the mouse they give you in the bundle. The geometry of the mouse forces your thumbs INTO the thumb buttons and forces you to hit them all the time. They must be trying to give these things away to get rid of them. I havent tried playing any games yet since i basically wiped any download progress i made the previous day. I'll update in a few months to give some further insight to this Laptop.

I just got my Acer5 today 6/5/2022 so I can't say much about it yet in regards to experience, however I can tell you how it was delivered, I didn't like the delivery method at all. When the package arrived the box was hanging open with some garbage quality amazon tape barely holding it closed, the box it was in for shipping was WAY larger than it needed to be, rectangular wide almost 75% bigger than my laptops
actual box and had no filler to keep it from moving, im surprised it was still in the delivery box at all.

None the less I tried to test the laptop and it wouldnt turn on I figured it was dead as I tested it in my car with an outlet in my car at work, fine whatever. I bring it back home (just go with it) and I try an actual wall outlet when I get off work, doesn't work just like the car. At this point i'm thinking, I know how computers work this is stupid and defective and I'm frustrated. I got all the way through starting the
process of sending it back on amazon when I googled one last time for answers and this worked for me.

TLDR Answer: Plug the laptop in, it will feel like its in but its not, make sure its plugged in with the plug facing sideways in the socket, then press down HARDER, and you will hear a click, basically you push it into th slot once and then push it a second time to get it in. It's some kind of feature and it made me think my laptop was bonked up. I hope this helps people, I know I was FRUSTRATED, otherwise
seems like a decent laptop so far.

Edit: It seems this has helped 50 people thats cool. Would be kinda cool to see what people have to say. If you'd like to direct thankyou messages feel free to email "deudomufo@gmail.com" im moderately enthused to hear how it's helping out.

P.S. laptop is still working great, but it does run into some issues as a video editing laptop in after effects. The software eventually freezes permanently and you have to close it. Which is a shame because the GPU should be great for it.. I believe it may just need another ram stick, the laptop is expandable.

Either the laptop industry, or the VR industry need to decide which types of ports should be standard. Stupid feature, so you are always having to hit any key to turn it back on. The most annoying feature ever.at. Worse yet, the keyboard is hard to see in even low light when it isn't lit up. I had a great MSI Dominator for nearly 8 years. It was showing it's age so I went shopping for a new laptop. I found this Acer Nitro 5 and decided to buy it as it was quite a bit less money than a new MSI. It's a zippy laptop loaded with Windows 11, plenty of SSD storage and ram. But the Nvidia Geforce RTX graphics card is a POS. The colors are wrong, for instance, bright red has this rust color to it. bright greens look more like olive green. Worse, there is no way to fix it I can find. The latest drivers from Nvidia are installed. I have scoured the internet for a solution and there appears to be none other than return it and buy another brand. There is no way to increase color intensity or saturation. I am disappointed that a company like Nvidia would produce this crap. Acer was no help either.
The speakers sound tinny like a cheap transistor radio. I use headphones or external speakers.

CPU: i7-11800H / RTX 3050Ti / 17.3"Style: Notebook onlyVerified Purchase
The description for this laptop is incorrect. In the list of available ports it is state that there is one "USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (DisplayPort)" which would mean that the USB-C port supports video out through an adapter or hub, but that is not the case. The USB-C on this laptop is only a standard USB 3.2 Gen 2 port that DOES NOT support the displayport alt function.

I thought it may have been the adapter/hub I was using at first so I bought 5 others with varying capabilities and the results were the same. The USB port will work but the display ports do not. I ended up finding the online user manual for this exact model (on Acer's site) and sure enough, it says that this model has a standard USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port rather than the thunderbolt 4 port on some of their other models.

This was very disappointing to me since this laptop meets my needs in every other aspect. This is a major issue for me since I am using this laptop to replace one that is connected to multiple monitors and peripherals through a dock.

If you're looking for a affordable gaming laptop, I'm sure this model came up. I mean, it looks cool, pricing appears reasonable, and there's room for upgrades, so what's not to like right? Well if only it was that simple.

First the pros.
1. Pricing.
2. Ports (3 usb-a ports + 1 usb-c port + 1 hdmi port + ethernet port) ... yup, it's chunky!
3. Wifi 6
4. upgradeable RAM
5. Additional Storage

For me, I loved the fact that I could upgrade the RAM along with the SSD's and HDD. So I did just that. I swapped out the old RAM for 2 Crucial 16GB DDR4, boosting my RAM to 32GB. Not too shabby. Then, I added an additional 256GB M.2 PCle SSD and a 1TB SATA SSD making it even more chunkier.

Parts List below (purchased through Newegg: Total cost $300.00):
-Crucial 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4 2666MHz DRAM (Notebook Memory) CL19 1.2V DR SODIMM (260-pin) CT2K16G4SFD8266
-Silicon Power 256GB NVMe M.2 2280 PCIe Gen3 x4 TLC SSD (SP256GBP34A60M28)
-WD Blue 3D NAND 1TB Internal SSD - SATA III 6Gb/s 2.5"/7mm Solid State Drive - WDS100T2B0A

So you would think it would be running amazingly well with all of this under the hood. At first, yes, but I noticed after a while that it would freeze up every now and then. Meaning the screen would freeze but would then go back to normal. I never took it anywhere so it stayed in one location on my work desk and stayed running into about 9 months of its purchased life (June 2022). Then it just died. No power. Nothing. Tried all the reset tricks but nope. Nada. So I sucked in my pride and went crying to ACER directly who shushed me and told me they would make it all better. They mentioned it was a faulty motherboard which they replaced since it was under warranty. No harm no foul. However....I've only had it for 9 months!

Now here we are...2 months after I received it back from ACER and now I got the notorious black screen of death. Yup. It finally happened. Oh I've tried everything. Even turning it off and on again. But no, I must suck up my pride once again and go crying to mommy ACER to fix this yet again. And you know what they said? Of course little Timmy! Ship it to us free of charge since it's still under warranty. I mean, I'm impressed with the warranty to be honest. But they're trying to distract me from the fact that it's been 11 months since I bought this thing and have had to turn it in for repairs TWICE!!! Yeah the customer service is great, yeah the warranty is great, but c'mon!!! Oh, that brings me to my cons list:

Cons (The bads, the uglies, the face palm moments)
-It's loud (like standing on the tarmac loud)
-Heats up fast (The cooling system isn't that great. I would recommend getting an external cooling pad)
-It's Big (I call it my BBC...big black computer. errr...what were you thinking I meant?)
-the power cord in the back requires a double push-in to ensure it connects (there are so many forums discussing this it's not even funny)
-Requires a ton of power to run this thing. So yeah, the power brick is literally a brick.
-And just because I'm picky, unfortunately you're stuck with the black & red ensemble. The glowy red color does not change. Either red or no red. That's it.

So all-in-all, for under $1k bucks, you can have an okay laptop with about 1.5TB of Storage and 512gb of ram. It's loud and hot, might shut off sometimes and never come on, but long as you get the extended warranty then you've got nothing to worry about. So make SURE you get the EXTENDED warranty if you do buy it. Trust me, it pays for itself and you'll be using it sooner than you think. But if you want to save yourself a headache and have the extra $$ to burn, then you can definitely do better than this machine. Avoid if possible, but if it can't be helped then at least get the warranty. You've been warned my friend.

Received the item. Unpacked and set it up per the guidelines. The performance of the hardware seemed pretty good. The cooling fans seemed to spin up loudly often when running some software. Installed a widely known gaming platform on the laptop, assuming that a "gaming" laptop would by default be able to load it and the games that run under it. When I would try to run half of the games, games icons simply showed in the icon bar and then disappear and the applications not load. Finally one applications errored a visible message stating it could not be run from a hypervisor. I went to a command line and found the OS stating that there was a hypervisor installed. So, I attempted to go and uninstall the OS standard hypervisor. But, it did not show as installed in the OS menus. I don't know if this was a factory configuration or some post-factory add. But, a gaming laptop should not have any issue with running gaming applications. Very disappointing to have such issues with a brand new device. I don't expect to spend this much on a "gaming laptop", and then have to sit for hours on end determining how to reconfigure a system to do gaming. Only good point to it was the speed of the hardware. Otherwise, it was a major letdown.

Obviously I can't speak to its longevity yet, but after the first few days, I'm pretty happy with it.
Pros:
Boot time and game startup/load times are extremely fast.
Picture quality is good, but not the brightest.
Acer provides instructions for installing a second SSD, along with the mounting hardware and cable and was very easy to accomplish. My last Acer laptop had a motherboard failure (8 years old) and the ability to transplant its drive into this machine saved me from time consuming methods to retrieve my data. The surgery took less than ten minutes.
Bus speeds for transferring large amounts of data between internal and external drives is extremely fast.

Cons:
The Nitrosense software allows full control of the speed of the dual fans. This would be great except for the fact that gaming makes it run extremely hot so I end up running the fans on max which is very loud and annoying.
Windows 11! First experience with this OS and I am not loving it. Dumb stuff like replacing commands with icons instead that you have to mouseover to figure out which one you are looking for, i.e. rename, cut, paste, etc.
Loaded with garbage bloatware, as usual. Frees up a lot of space removing the stuff you'll never use.

All in all, very happy so far. Runs everything I've thrown at it, and very quickly.

UPDATE: my battery is garbage. I tried running it unplugged for the first time today and within 20 minutes, I was at 13%. Amazon customer service passed me off to Acer. Acer had me run some tests, concurred that my battery is bad, but refused to send me one which could fix my problem within minutes, instead saying that I would have to ship it to them and get it back in a few weeks. Instead of waiting, I now have to buy a new battery to fix my NEW laptop. Not happy.

Seeing this made me gasp thinking it was a good deal when it was on sale for 850 US. i was so wrong. A 3050 with a miserable 10300h at 8gb at 2933 was a horrible combination. it is hard to just play simple high giving fps games like fornite, pubg, rocket league and many more. the only game i would cap out at 144 is rocket league and even then it would flicker every now and then to 90 or so. but other games at LOW texters no shadows whatever it may be, bottom of the barrel low barley gives you 60 and half the time your playing at 40fps. this is a honest review and i should have spent the extra hundred on something like a tuf laptop with a 17inch and better specs. this is not the computer for any real gaming. also when you receive the computer at "256gb" you realistically only get 180 because windows takes about 70-80 gigs just downloading. the drivers for this gpu is horrible at the moment and is bottlenecked by the absolute worst cpu i have ever used. every game is full load on gpu while the cpu cant push anything and dont think about overclocking because this computers psu wont allow it because its so bare minimum with the voltage that you cant touch anything about it besides upgrading the ram. dont go with this laptop is is HORRIBLE.

The laptop is great except the item description is wrong. It incorrectly states that the USB-C port can be used as a display port. It cannot be. The item model AN517-54-79L1 does not have a USB-C port with display capabilities. If you are interested in having a laptop with two separate monitors, this is not the laptop for you. ACER does have laptops where the description is true, but this is not one of them. I am returning because of this.

Also, since I could not find the answer anywhere else, the laptop came with 16GB of memory which was 2x8GB. If you want to upgrade the memory to 32GB or 64GB (yes, it does support 64GB), you will need to buy two sticks of the appropriate size.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Machine is Fine - Build Quality and Support Leaves a Lot to be Desired
Reviewed in the United States ???? on February 26, 2022

I got my computer on February 1st. It had a defective screen. I sent it to Acer. It took them two days to get my a shipping label. It took seven days for it to reach them. After they had it for a week, they could not give me an ETA on when repairs would be finished. I finally got it back today, on the 25th, and immediately returned it to Amazon because I had to have a functional computer and couldn't hold onto my loaner without a solid estimate for when I'd get this one back.

So it was nearly a full four weeks from when I originally got it that it was in my hands in a fully working state, and from what I've seen, this is fast for Acer.

Which is a shame - this is a lot of computer for the price. To give credit where it's due, I tested the laptop when it was returned to me and it seemed like the screen problems I was having were completely fixed.

Considering the price puts this solidly in the mid-range category, you're getting a lot for what you're paying. It doesn't need an additional harddrive or RAM to be completely viable out of the box. (I bought the 1TB/16GB RAM model.) If you want to add a harddrive, there's a SATA cable in the box, and it's fairly easy to get the back panel off. There's even a tutorial by Acer on YouTube on exactly how to do it.

In terms of right-to-repair, though, it's mediocre. It's easy to get to the guts of the computer itself. I'd like having easy access panels for the HDD and RAM, but that's a minor complaint - it's not hard to pry this laptop open.

What's disappointing is the mount for the screen. Screens die faster than anything else on a laptop. The way this thing is built, I'm not surprised my screen was defective out of the box. You'll want to always open and close the lid with both hands if you want your screen to last the lifetime of the laptop. If you ever need to change the screen out, it's clearly not designed for you to be able to do so. The bezels aren't as simple to pop open as they are on other units, and the screen is held in place by glue, making it so that you probably want to take it to a technician unless you have some experience doing these kinds of repairs yourself.

I wish I could say my experience with this was stellar. I loved my Acer Predator Helios from 2018. I've loved the Aspire I've used for writing documents. I'm just completely unimpressed by Acer's service. Three weeks in and no ETA concerning when the laptop would be back in my hands was unacceptable. They only send you updates when they receive your laptop and when they're sending it back. You can't find out any further details - not even where you're at in the queue.

I ended up getting a Lenovo Idea Pad 3 Gaming and so far I am loving it. I can't rate Lenovo's support because I haven't had to contact them. The machine I am using now feels rock solid; much better than I would have expected given the amount of power it has for the price. (Under $800.)

With this laptop - it looks like it would be worth it if you get it and it works as intended right out of the box. But - I'm far from the only person who has had an issue with it. They've had build quality problems with the Nitro line all the way through, and there are cases where it took 5-6 weeks for people to get their machines back if they went through Acer's support.

With these specs, from the testing I did when I had it hooked up to an external monitor, it performs as beautifully as you'd expect. There is a rock solid machine here if you're careful with the screen and get one that works right out of the box.

If you don't?

Don't deal with Acer support. Buy a third party warranty if you think you'll ever need it. Buying online, I'd go for something without a lot of reported build problems. This is the kind of laptop that I would buy in person so I could test and immediately replace a defective unit.

My trust in Acer is completely shot after this experience. At this point, I'm just glad they got it back to me within the return window. I jumped in because I've had amazing experiences with Acer hardware in the past. Those will probably be my last Acer machines. It's completely unacceptable for a multi-million dollar company to mass produce a line of laptops with a high number of defects and a support process that leaves the buyer in the dark for the majority of it.

So - based on build quality, it's a 3 1/2 to 4 star laptop if it works. If it doesn't? You're better off returning it and getting another computer.

I really shopped around for a laptop I could use for video editing and graphic design. The Acer Nitro 5 AN517-54-79L1 had decent reviews and it seemed like the best option in my price range. Well, the first one I ordered had problems so I had to send it back, then the replacement Amazon sent had the exact same problems so I had to send that back too!

The issues (and general things I just disliked):
* A weird graphics glitch where the screen would take on a "double image" effect. Nothing would get rid of this but a restart, and then the problem would eventually come back.
* Another weird graphics glitch where I'd be watching a video (on Youtube or elsewhere) and suddenly the video would start scrolling quickly from right to left, over and over. Again, the only way to stop this was a restart. These problems happened on both models, and the people at Amazon tech support couldn't fix it.
* Loud fans under any significant graphics load. Loud enough to make you worry something might be wrong. I've since switched to a computer with an RTX360 and it seems to handle graphics much better. I never tried playing games with the Nitro but if it was whirring like that with simple graphics software I imagine it'd have a meltdown if you tried to play a modern game.
* The case is thin and has way too much flex, especially on the first model. On more than one occasion I picked up the laptop while it was playing a video or audio, I was just moving it normally, and as my hand gripped the case I'd feel the plastic flex, I'd accidentally crush the works inside and the audio would sloooooow down and get wonky. That's WAY too much flex!
* This computer is an absolute magnet for dust. I'd wipe it down and by the end of the day it looked filthy again. The stickers on the case also came off and left a weird, sticky residue. Both models always looked old and busted, despite being brand new.
* The keyboard is black with faint red letters, only lighting up when you're actually typing on it. I knew about this and got a keyboard cover with printed letters, which helped, but otherwise the illegible keyboard would've driven me nuts.
* It was just heavy enough that it was annoying to lug around.
* The battery life was not very good.

Acer has a decent rep as a company and as I said the reviews were good, but both of the Nitros I dealt with gave me endless problems. I'd strongly caution anyone against buying this model.

We bought this laptop NEW for our son for Christmas last year. Right before Christmas, we unpackaged the laptop to get it all set up so it was ready to go Christmas morning. To our surprise - the laptop would not turn on. We tried several different ways and we still could not get the laptop to turn on. So, we called Acer customer service to see what was going on. The Acer rep told us that our laptop had been serviced in September for issues! We told him that that couldn’t be so because we just bought it brand new off of Amazon - he insisted that it was a refurbished laptop and even had case #’s for the services done to the laptop in September. We immediately called Amazon, to complain that we had purchased a new laptop from them and had received a used one. It took a half hour of bickering with the rep before she offered to “speak with her manager” to issue us a refund of the difference in price. Unfortunately, it was too close to Christmas to return and receive an actual new laptop in time for Christmas morning. Amazon eventually gave me the refund of the price difference and the rep stated that “Amazon has no control over whether a customer receives a refurbished or NEW laptop!” Are you kidding me?! They are sure to make you pay different price points though - even though they don’t know what you’re actually going to receive.
Although - my son was thrilled to get this laptop - you can imagine our disgust. To top it off - the laptop lasted less than six months before the screen went out on it. Do you think I can find a replacement screen? What a joke. Buyer beware.

Con. Okay so I ordered this laptop for my daughter's birthday. So on day one I told her it will not turn on till you charge it so first thing she did was plugged it in and let it charge a few moments later we powered it up and my daughter was super excited so she went on to download a game she likes to play online. So the next day she goes to play the game and the screen froze shortly into the game so first thing was to wait to see if maybe it was lag but after a minute or so nothing still froze. Mouse didn't move so next I pushed alt, control, delete. Nothing so the ESC and nothing then the windows key. So I powered it down and powered back up keyboard lights up but no display so I hold the power key down for 15 seconds nothing. So I decided to power down again and power up and nothing but the keyboard powers up. So I this point I'm upset and my daughter is super bummed after being super happy and excited a moment ago .so I called costumer support and they let me know that my computer is under warranty and it can be taken care of but I get cut off and I'm running late for work so I decided I'd call back after work. So I called again and talked to costumer support again so went through the same conversation and then they said they could refund my money or replace it I optioned for a replacement they said ok but because of the price there supervisor would have to ok it I said ok so after about ten minutes on the phone the till me that there supervisor can't ok the transaction that they have to wait for the morning supervisor to do this I said fine and that I would be contacted the next day....... Well it's been so it's been 4 days and nothing I'm starting to feel scammed by Amazon for some reason. So in my opinion stay away from this laptop and DO NOT BUY ANY Electronics from AMAZON.

Pros. Didn't work long enough to find out.

The laptop itself looks great, it’s a bit massive at 17” & a little heavy too, but what do you expect when it’s that size. It has a nice red & black keyboard that is visually appealing. It also has some pretty big fans on the back. Again, hardware wise, the laptop looks great.however m laptop has adequate power running to it & has had plenty of time to charge, but sadly it won’t turn on. I was really looking forward to evolving from only gaming on consoles to making it more of a mobile/on the go experience but now I’m a little turned off from pc gaming just because of the fact that my first gaming laptop won’t even power on. There’s no light indicators flashing to determine if it’s even charging either. Don’t know if the laptop itself is defective or if I was just given a bad power supply (which is pretty unlikely). Don’t know if I just made a bad choice of laptops either, the reviews looked pretty solid when I was first thinking about making the purchase. I guess I won’t know until I get a replacement. :/

I have been in the IT world for over 20 years. I left the laptop on the charger and woke up to a cracked screen. Called Acer support and they wouldn't cover my cracked screen. Two days later the computer would no longer turn on. Acer Support said that a cracked screen can stop a computer from working and it's not covered.

Remember, I have been in IT for over 20 years so I'm not stupid. I have worked on hundreds of computers and never seen a screen issue stop the whole computer form working.

So I guess after just little over 120 days I now have an expensive paperweight. I thought I would give this Acer a try because of a good Prime Day deal but this was my first Acer and my last because the support is so horrible. The Agent wouldn't listen to me and played games with me to get me waisting my time to get me off the phone.

I would suggest paying a little more and go with a company that actually supports their products.

The unit I received was not the same as advertised. Mine only has one M.2 SSD slot, and it came with two 8GB RAM sticks, not one 16GB stick. The only way to expand the memory is to replace one or both of the installed RAM with larger capacity RAM sticks. Same is true of the SSD hard drive, the only way to expand the size is to replace the existing drive with a larger one, or install a SATA SSD with the provided hardware. Problem with replacing it with a larger M.2 is, the license code for Windows 11 is encrypted on the drive, so unless you're tech-savvy, you will need to have it done by a professional.

In gaming mode, once the fans kick on, the battery life drops to somewhere between one and two hours, and less if you are running it in VR. I tested it with a Samsung Odyssey Plus (Windows Mixed Reality), it drained over 50% of the battery in less than 15 minutes.

While it is what it says it is, a 'gaming laptop' it barely meets the requirements. If you are into serious gaming, look elsewhere so you won't be disappointed.

It never powered up. I got the box and as soon as I picked it up I could feel everything inside the box sliding around. The laptop was actually packed well in it's own box for the manufacturer, but then Amazon put the smaller box into a much bigger box with no packing material. I have worked in shipping my whole adult life (about 35 years) and anyone who has ever shipped a package knows that is no way treat delicate electronics. I could just pitcher it being slammed around every time the shipping truck took a turn or hit it's breaks. I don't put this issue on Acer. They did a good job packing it. This one is on Amazon and their shipping department. I put packing material in the box when I retuned it. I couldn't bring myself to ship it back the way they shipped it to me.

A great deal from a trusted seller, yes please. Got my PC and it works amazing.
I will update over the next year if any issues arise, when you pay 1500$ for a laptop you expect to last a few years right.?
So After a month or so I am finally trying to register my laptop cause its too hot to go outside and im gonna be inside for a day or 2 and im now realizing this laptop was previously owned and actually used....
My "New" laptop is registered to a Russian lady and I'm receiving text messages from Microsoft in Russian and can't understand the Microsoft home page also in Russian thanks to the previous owner. At least they lived in America it says so it's an in country return I received as a new product, but still for some reason Im unable to correct the info or language no matter what I do it won't change now I get to try to contact Microsoft.... that should take all day and accomplish nothing as a lifelong Microsoft customer I know this to be the case. So beware when you buy this item it may not be new it may be preowned and registered to someone else in another language.... not super happy.

I saved up money to purchase this and i wanted to spend a little less so I went with this vendor; big mistake.I was spongebob ready to have a new laptop. I open the box to reveal a gloriously clean, sexy, and amazing computer. All in all the computer didn't turn on at all even after plugging it in. Amazon was great about trying to provide me with options, but wanted me to contact the third party. Nope. I said take back the item, but now I have to wait on UPS to come pick up the defective product so i had to take a day off work. first and last time ordering electronics from amazon.
