My only regret is not purchasing this computer sooner. Bought it to replace a laptop HP that is less than a year old that was an utter disappointment. It cost twice as much as the Acer and far less nimble or ready for anything of significance. It is basically just a great paperweight. The Acer, however, out of the box is lightening fast and incredibly easy to maneuver. The keyboard has a nice bounce and I'm loving having the numeric keypad - highly unusual for a laptop!

Here's what I didn't expect which was incredibly nice to have:

1. That annoying webcam peep-hole...Acer provides a couple of plastic covers so you can keep it covered when not in use and open it when you need to show your beautiful face. Now, HP never provided anything like that!

2. They even supply screws for the installation of an additional internal hard drive, should you make such a purchase. Now, how sweet is that?! I would not have an idea how to do that but I did appreciate the thought.

More than anything, the machine has just been solid as a rock and has not flinched at any level. If there's any regret, it's the fact that Windows 11 is installed in some odd security mode which makes installing the drivers for printers and other devices nearly impossible. Having to maneuver all of that was more of a headache than anything else and that's a Microsoft issue, having nothing to do with Acer. Once Windows 11 safe mode is uninstalled, it's smooth sailing.

Details matter and Acer won me on the details, quality and sturdiness of this computer. Will certainly look to buy more Acers in the future. I am extremely happy with this purchase and incredibly sorry I did not consider this brand in the past. Won't make that same mistake again.

Highly recommend! In fact, I just might buy another one for work...

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Decent Bang for the Buck
Reviewed in the United States ???? on June 2, 2022
CPU: i7-1165G7Style: Notebook OnlyVerified Purchase
So we just got this laptop a couple days ago, and I'll update things as they go along. Firstly it's a pretty decent laptop for the money, trying to read reviews on it is a pretty mixed basket because they have so many other cheap/er laptops that most of the reviews are not for this one. So you'll have to pay attention to the model number they are reviewing. (Acer Aspire 5 A515-56-702V)
Here's a couple of my deciding points which lead to the purchase:

- Aluminum case (not super thick but still not plastic) has a more sturdy feel to it (within reason as this is not a $2K laptop).

- Solid Intel i7 Processor, first came to market Sep 2020. Good sized cache.

- It has a 512GB NVMe SSD drive in it which is the M.2 format, these are some of the fastest drives out right now as far as standards go. Most laptops with SSD are taking about the SATA drives, which while fast, are not anywhere close to the M.2 speeds.

- Being that it's an M.2 drive this leaves an entire drive bay empty in the laptop for future storage upgrade (SATA) if needed or having an alternate backup drive right in the laptop etc. (i.e. expandable in the future if you need it)

- It has 16GB of memory, I'm not sure why so many laptops out there only have 8GB, just running basic windows will eat at least 5GB+ of memory which doesn't leave a lot left for everything else. (In my humble opinion) and I appreciated the ability to upgrade that further in the future if needed to 24GB.

- It has plenty of USB ports and HDMI out for conference rooms/TV's etc.

Some of the cons:
- The power adapter is a very small "pin" power adapter. Needless to say this was rather disappointing because we all know that sometimes cords get pulled or bumped etc. And it's likely to damage the internals because it's very small. I would have liked to see one of the thicker power adapter connections just for strength.
- Windows 11 - Personally I'm not a huge fan thus far but mainly just for functionality reasons like you can't ungroup open programs on the task bar, it's one icon and that's it with no ability to change it. It's not a tablet it's a computer.
- No Thunderbolt Port
- No option to charge via USB C (which would negate the very tiny pin adapter)

So we did run into a couple issues. We had a problem with the laptop not seeing the power cord plugged in, it would blink as if it was going to start working (windows battery page in settings) then act like it was never plugged in. We reached out to Acer and they had us reset the battery via a paperclip and pin hole on the bottom. It's worked find so far after that. Getting a tech on the online chat via Acer support was fast and he was able to quickly resolve the issue.

So generally, this being my very first Acer Laptop, I'm pleased with things so far. We'll see how it holds up in the long run.

Perfect PC for my teen - light and durable for school, and powerful enough to get through everything he is using it for, as well are normal gaming use (Roblox, Minecraft etc).

The keyboard is well laid out and the backlit feature is awesome, and the connectivity is good too - the large number of ports (USB C and A, HDMI and Ethernet, 3.5mm Headphone) are good to have, and the Bluetooth and WIFI seems snappy and stable as well.

Possibly, only criticism is that the audio quality from the internal speakers is awful - when compared by my old MBP at least - but using a Bluetooth or wired speaker or headset means you can avoid that anyway.

A Laptop with an elegant design and decent features, ideal for office work as in my case, you can also use it for college or university, as long as it is not for games or graphic design, for those cases there are better laptops but much more expensive.

I added 4 gb more of ram to have a total of 8 gb and a 1 tera hdd to back up data, more than enough.

The only thing wrong in the description is that it does not have an illuminated keyboard, I mainly bought it for that reason and I am a little disappointed that they misinform about the characteristics of the product, otherwise its performance is very acceptable for the price we pay, compared to other brands with the same characteristics, this Acer is cheaper.

It's a nice laptop, very light, but before I brought it, I did my research in which another drive (2.5 HDD) can be installed along with extra RAM.
Got the laptop, installed the extra RAM, then installed the extra HDD which had Windows 7 on it.(Yes I know the computer itself already has Win11).
For some odd reason I can't boot off of the extra HDD(I installed it into the computer). I can see the extra HDD in Windows 11, but can't boot from it, to boot into Windows 7.
I can't boot from my USB ports when I tried using a memory stick.
When I got into the BIOS, there's no option to boot to anything else...only "Windows Boot Manager".
There are other users of Acer laptop who have had the same issue... I'm still seeking a solution for this, because I would like to boot off of Windows 7(in my extra HDD), and use the SDD storage as extra storage(wiping off Win11 from the storage).
But overall....fast computer..bright screen...I would recommend it!

Not even centered under the space bar. … Transitioning from a more rational design where things are centered makes it difficult not to continually right-click. Yes, this design is clearly visible in the pictures, I just didn’t notice. If this is a deal breaker for you, now you might notice! As for me, I’m sure I will adapt in a few days.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Inexpensive Laptop?
Reviewed in the United States ???? on October 14, 2022

I got this for my elderly mother-in-law who uses a computer almost exclusively for emailing. So she doesn’t need a whole lot of memory; 4/64 gigs is plenty of memory. At this price point, it’s a surprisingly attractive and solidly made laptop—comparable in initial quality, fit/finish to a MacBook. By far the worst aspect of this unit is the inclusion of Windows ‘S’ mode. The ‘S’ stands for safety; I have another word in mind! I won’t go into the ugly details here; half of the other reviews will do that. Suffice it to say that I opted out of ‘S’ mode, despite the possible risks/downsides. Many have complained about the keyboard; I see no problem with it whatsoever. Other than the ‘S’ mode issue, the laptop itself may just be the best inexpensive PC I’ve encountered.

I bought this laptop just to have something "mobile" when I want to get online or do some "light work" out of the house (I normally use my desktop computer which is a BEAST!)

I will be using this to watch movies/videos, surf the net, check emails, go on social media and a couple other programs such a OBDII reader that I will use with my OBDII device via wifi or usb to work on my cars.

4GB of ram is good enough for what I will be doing. If I ever feel that it needs a little more power/speed I will add another 4 or 8 but so far it is perfect.

The 128GB SSD is more than enough for what I need and this was one of the key factors that made me buy this computer. Cheaper ones come with eMMC storage which is slower and normally only 32GB or 64GB

It does not have backlit keyboard, I wish it did but it is not a deal breaker and I already knew it didn't have it before placing my order.

It takes about 45 seconds to boot (a little bit on the slow side) but once its loaded it runs pretty smoothly

It came with Windows 11 S More which won't allow you to install anything except from the Microsoft store (I think that's what's called), but getting out of S mode is SUPER EASY, takes less than 1 minute. There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to do that. But, be aware, seems like if you get out of S mode there is no turning back!

In a few words, this is a very good machine for the price. I am not intending to use it for gaming, editing videos or designing. It is strictly for light use (browse the net, documents, watching videos/movies, and a couple of programs that I like that don't require much to run).

It is pretty lightweight, the casing looks nice, the screen is matte and bright enough, the speakers are OK, seems a little bit fragile if you were to drop it or step on it (I am always careful, so this is not a concern). I also like the fact that is a name brand and is not a chrome book!

I don't give it 5 stars because it would've been nice to get it with 8GB and a backlit keyboard. Other than that is perfect for what I need!

Ive inly been really using this laptop for like a month and a half but Its a good laptop. For rreference though My last laptop I had was used when I recieved it and "on its last legs" and started having noticible issues once it turned 11 years old...I enjoy doing video editing and that over a decade old laptop was no longer covering it so I decided to inest in this laptop. With its core I7 processer of 16gb of ram its doing really well amd seems to not struggle at all for what I do and or need. Its a good computer cabale of doing lots of work and the battery life is superb. I ran a couple of stress tests on it and it preformed well. The one downside is that because its windows 11 alot of stuff that was free and or included on windows 10 or lower is not included , most of the software thats available on this laptop is consistent of free trials or trying to get you to make a yearly purchase to use the programs such as the microsoft suite ( which will run 99$ a year or the price of like 9.99 a month). And the free trials are short lived or require you to put in credit card info...so I would suggest anyone who gets this laptop to be ready to either pay for what use to be free or start doing research on free open source software that is comparable to whatever programs you may want to use that are no longer free on the windows platform. Windows 11 isnt really bad its just different. As for the hardware I suggest doing your research before buying this laptop, and make sure you get the correct processer type for what you do, core I3 or below will not cut it in most cases try core i5 or higher and get atleast 16gb of ram aka memory to be on the safe side for anything other then really light light computer use. Also since this is a thinner laptop it has no cd rom and can in some cases overheat a little as it needs some ventalation when in use if doing heavy duty work which is to be expected for its thinness, and my very slight complaint is that while doing heavy duty work it can get to humming a bit too loudly for my taste but nothing that is too terribly concerning. I reccomend this laptop and I love it thus far.

If you intend to attempt to change the OS on this know you can't. Microsoft paid the BIOS maker to lock the BIOS so you get windows 11 and no chance to change it. The OS is so large because microsoft just builds on top of the last OS instead of starting fresh. So it has all the same underwhelming errors and random restarts. I changed too many settings to try to make it more private and I got a blue screen and had to reinstall the OS. Oh, if you know anything about computers and networks you'll recognize this as dead head PC. That is why you must log on to an email every time. You are now fully locked into microsoft at all times. This is never your machine. It is fully microsofts data mining tool. I would return but I was optimistic at first and took all the stickers off of it. So if you do change the hard drive I'm not sure how you will get an Operating System back on it.

I am upgrading from an Aspire 1 to a 5. It is a decent low budget laptop BUT first thing you should do is find another version of Windows 11 and install it. The reason is some of these were sent out with windows that was not the final version and causes all kinds of problems(not start menu, black screen, apps not working right). You can find you activation number after you install a new version of windows by opening up a command prompt with admin right and type: wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey and hit enter. Copy down you activation number and activate your new windows 11. If you have no start menu and cant open a command prompt hit: ctrl+alt+delet and then click Task manager, from the File menu click: Run new task, then type: cmd, and click the box that says: Create this task with administrative privileges. Then type or paste : wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey and then click enter, this will give you your activation number. DO NOT 'reset' this PC as it will reinstall the bad version of windows as well. You must find a new version somewhere of Windows 11 (shouldn't be to hard to find).

Now, as far as the laptop its ok for what it is. I am able to game Battlefield 214 of it with medium/low settings with some lag but its playable.
The ram is upgradable which is nice. You cant have a total of 20gb of RAM. DD4 2400.
The processor only 2 cores but they do max at 4ghz and are Intel i3 which is a nice upgrade from the intel atom I had but 4 cores would be better.
This has an actual hardrive which is a plus to the 64gb flash drive my Aspire 1 had.
The battery last about 2 hours which I wish was longer.
The display is 1080p but it doenst seem as good as my aspire 1 for some reason even after updating the driver. Maybe more ram will help.
I paid $150 for my Aspire 1 and $280 for the Aspire 5, nearly twice and Id say its not really worth the price.
Not sure if Ill keep it but I could much more right now.

I get it, it's cheap. So, I'll put up with having to adjust the screen so I won't get a picture that looks like a negative, and the way that the opening screen when I use my Chrome browser is sometimes really small and has to be stretched out before I can use it. I'll use earphones to hear dialog on some movies because it doesn't do well picking up very low-volume sounds, like whispers.
What drives me crazy is clicking on something, and then having things go screwy because sometimes my cursor is just a cursor-image and the actual cursor has moved elsewhere, like the upper left corner of the screen, or gets hung up some where until I release it for a few seconds, or like just now, playing a game, I click on a certain area, and I get sent to the exit page, even though I didn't want the exit page, and the area I clicked is nowhere near the area you click to exit. I tried re-starting the game, but it didn't help, I tried moving to another part of the touchpad, didn't work. I can't play the game if I can't access what I'm clicking on. WTF?

This product is basically okay but has one major problem in you can't remove the battery easily to do a hard shutdown. In frequent occasions I haven't been able to shut it down. This seems to be a known Windows 11 problem. I have run the power troubleshoot several times to be informed there isn't a problem but it still won't shutdown. With Acer laptops in the past I simply have removed the battery to do a hard shutdown to resolve things. With this model that appears to require taking it apart. It's a toss up who to find at fault, Microsoft or Acer.

This laptop worked great until it overheated and burned, melting the bottom of the laptop. This could have been a serious tragedy if I had been asleep or if I'd left the laptop unattended. Luckily I was home and smelled the burning plastic before anything else caught fire.

This review is not intended to be a reflection of Amazon nor its customer service. Rather, the manufacturer and their poorly, cheaply constructed product. The manufacturer (Acer) offered to take a look at it and try to fix it under warranty, but asked me to pay for all the safe packaging, ship the laptop, and to wait 7-10 business days for turnaround. I need it for work. So I took it upon myself to take it to a tech repair shop, and when they opened it up, they found a lot of things held together with electrical tape, corroded cpu/USB parts, and a heat sink that fans into the laptop itself. Where does all that heat go? No wonder this thing overheated. Please, save your money and invest in a manufacturer that won't cut this many corners. Such a safety hazard and I can't believe their poor response. I know you get what you pay for, but even with a low-budget electronic device, this should never happen.

The performance was pretty respectable for the price, although one reason for the low price is the meager 4GB of RAM. I upgraded mine as soon as I bought it. I also had a 1TB HD laying around, so I added that at the same time. (I love the performance of the NVMe drive, but 128GB is pretty small.) Most other laptops I've worked on had a small panel that could be removed to access the RAM and HD, but this one required removing the entire back panel. This was pretty tedious, and it would be disturbingly easy to damage the cover. Replacing it was also a little tricky. I realize that laptops don't have much in the way of user-serviceable parts, but that's no reason to make it harder to access those they do have.

Despite the i3 CPU, this machine runs very hot, and vents the exhaust straight downward. Don't even think about using it on you actual lap, at least not without some kind of lap desk.

Within a month or two of purchase, I noticed the hinges starting to show signs of serious wear. Then, the frame for the display started to crack. This got steadily worse. Then, one day the display itself was clearly damaged. The next day, it stopped working altogether. The machine still works otherwise, but it can only be used with an external display, which kind of defeats the purpose of a laptop.

I used this laptop exclusively at home, and I don't think my handling was unusually rough, so this rapid failure is hugely disappointing. Unfortunately, this seems to be something of a trend. As manufacturers have shifted toward "thin and light" designs, laptops have grown increasingly flimsy. This machine failed after less than six months, and the one it replaced only lasted about a year. By contrast, I'm typing this review on a five year old Toshiba that I kept around as a backup. Laptops are just a little too expensive to be considered disposable.

I use this computer for simple day to day tasks. It crashes daily. I bought is mid-July and two keys have already fallen off. I am retired, and don't abuse my machine, but this is the worst laptop I have ever had. The support web page is difficult to navigate, and it is not helpful. They post an article on fixes with no links, and when you try to find it, the search results in a link to an add. So sorry I bought this

I've had this laptop for just under a year and I would absolutely not recommend it. I bought it for basic school tasks - reading textbooks, word & excel documents, video lectures, etc. Here are my complaints:
- It will sometimes not turn back on after falling asleep, requiring a restart.
- It will randomly get extremely hot and loud until it kills the battery - even when it is not in use!!!
- Speed is not consistent. Sometimes webpages and documents load just fine, other times very slow. I'm always on my home WiFi, which is strong, so that should not be the issue.
- Even when this machine is operating as it should, the battery life is terrible.

To be fair, this computer is okay for basic tasks...when it actually works! I'm just hoping it can last me two more years of school without too much frustration. I bought this as an upgrade to my old Chromebook but find myself still using the Chromebook frequently when the laptop gives me trouble.

So far I like the screen. But the glitchy windows features are driving me nuts. Driver stopped working on speakers then came back on a day later. Windows help keeps asking for Microsoft store to update to use. It’s updated but doesn’t recognize it is new so keeps asking for update. So doesn’t work At all. Wanted to find new drivers from acer website but acer doesn’t recognize serial or snid or model number. It doesn’t even have A515 in there list. I found that it is regional. So I guess find a regional website that works. Mexico Europe??? Tech support I’m coming. Grrrr. New Microsoft update works with new drivers that only acer can provide. As of now.

Noticeably fragile, weak even, not physically but in its functionality. It runs much of anything you'd want to run, but often with difficulty. In many cases the entire thing will just get slow. For example, sometimes if booting up on low battery, it will have a distorted screen and take longer than usual. Disappointing.

1.0 out of 5 stars avoid at all costs. ships w. defective bios!

i bought this laptop thinking it would be perfect. i looked at a lot of other models and this one seemed the best and it was cheap. i found out first hand why that is when it arrived. first of all please avoid this laptop at all costs. it looks like a great cheap laptop. its defective from the factory. please research this for yourself. it ships with a firmware that will prevent the battery from charging. that’s right. from the factory it will brick itself and not charge. if your install takes too long or if you buy it and you don’t have over 40% battery charge to install the newest bios from acer, which voids your windows home s right off the bat, you are stuck with a brick. there’s no way to charge the battery. i got to go through the forced microsoft startup experience which took about 30 minutes to complete due to the computer deciding to get online and completely update windows with no way to bypass it first thing and then i wondered why it wasn’t charging. i found out at 15% battery remaining that it was a critical bios issue but if it dropped below 40% i would no longer be able to charge it. and that’s what happened. as i frantically sat with my brand new computer i tried to force the bios update, the machine hit 10% battery life, auto power saving hibernation mode instantly, i tried to reboot into windows and it’s bricked with a red battery logo now.

acer should be down right ashamed for selling these and putting them on the market. read the other reviews. it’s likely you will buy one of these machines direct from amazon like i did sept 10 2022. i used it for a grand total of 45 minutes between opening the box, updating windows and critically updating bios only for it to brick. buy a better machine or don’t get one at all. my other machine broke down and i needed something quick and now. this would’ve done the job. it ended up letting me down right off the bat and cost me the time and effort plus my business lost revenue. unacceptable. F- rating.

This is the 2nd Acer computer received from Amazon. First one was returned because battery was defective. Had this 2nd computer for approximately 10 weeks and had to factory reset. Computer was telling me that I was connected to my Wifi but couldn't sign in because no Internet connection. My Chromebook connected just fine. Spent 45 minutes attempting to connect to Internet, shutting computer off several times in hopes it would reset or something. Power button also was not cooperating, turned off fine, but needed several attempts to restart. Had power button pressed several times for 15 - 20 seconds waiting for something to happen. Usually took 3 or 4 attempts to start. Finally shut if off and walked away for an hour. Praise be, it finally allowed me to connect to Internet. I immediately factory reset, hoping this will fix the situation. I attempted to return this piece of garbage to Amazon, sadly couldn't. I understand this computer only cost $300, but all I use it for is email, Amazon and catching up on world news. Last laptop I had was also a $300 Lenovo purchased 4 years ago. It finally died. That 4 year old Lenovo laptop was better than this Acer. Wish I would have purchased Lenovo brand again. Nothing but regrets with this purchase. Christmas is here. If I find a great deal, $300 limit, on a Lenovo or HP I will definitely purchase and keep this Acer as a backup. Waste of money, waste of time. Two Acer laptops and both were garbage. Will never buy this brand again, and will always recommend against purchasing

I bought this as a computer to carry with me for word processing, data input (spreadsheet), and internet research. It is barely acceptable for any of these purposes:
(1) Sound is inadequate. YouTube videos barely reach whisper level at the highest volume setting. Efforts to resolve the problem have not worked.
(2) After 2 months, the touch pad stopped working. No response at all, no matter the system settings. A portable laptop that requires a connected mouse is unacceptable.
(3) Windows 11 Home, punishment for being a loyal Microsoft user all these years. Admittedly this is a preference and an opinion not shared by everyone.

In short, this is a piece of junk. I suspect that hidden behind the poorly installed peripherals is a decent computer. I wish I could use it.

Update: With the latest Windows 11 update, the machine has achieved doorstop speed. So now in addition to the problems mentioned above, I have lots of reading time while it does even the simplest of tasks.

The computer was wonky from the start as the new operating system requires you to use your hotmail or other Microsoft email to login and get the thing going. And from there it’s all down hill. I tried to use Google Chrome which worked better than the windows browser but eventually even that failed. Setting up email on this thing was a nightmare and it really cannot handle office 360. I think the issue is this computer us but made to run Windows 11. This when I went back to reset the computer to factory settings the computer went into an infinity loop of death. The computer is a useless paperweight that uses up electricity and gets warm. It might be a fire hazard. Called customer service x2. Did not get much help. Even when they finally said they’d send out a slip to mail it back to fix it, I never got anything in my email on it or by postal mail. It’s been another month of waiting and now it’s too late to send back to Amazon for a refund. So Acer is all I can deal with. And they are not aces. They are more like something else that starts with an a…. Buyer beware. Doc Jim.

Laptop wouldn’t turn on right out of the box which I found strange. I’ve owned tons of laptops and they come with enough of a charge to get ya going. So I let this piece of junk charge for 2 hours came back n it turned on. I used it for a day. Let it sit idle, came back the next day and it’s turned off. Fully charged, blue light on the side. Won’t turn back on. Getting sent back and won’t make the same mistake twice. Garbage

Wanted to get a relatively cheap laptop with a 1080p screen that could do mainly basic functions like watching videos from various streaming services (Youtube/Twitch/Netflix) in Chrome. This POS can't even do that properly. RAM runs at 100% while idle because 4gb is barely enough for just the operating system to function, and just having chrome open is enough to push the CPU to 100% as well, so doing nearly anything is extremely slow. Screen is 1080p but the quality is not great. I don't know what super geniuses thought to put the cooling fan in front of the keyboard instead of on the side, but it makes it sound like a tornado whenever it is doing anything at all, even idling. Oh and also if this thing is anywhere near you while you are sleeping, be ready for the fans to rev up to max randomly, out of nowhere, while it's in sleep mode and wake you up, for no reason. Sound is also very quiet, you need to crank it up to 50/60 to hear pretty much anything.

I haven't bought a laptop in a few years and I thought even cheap laptops would be able to deliver on basic functionality, but boy was I wrong. I still think the Acer Aspire 5 is a decent laptop line, just not this model. Learn from my mistake, save up and buy something that's at least $500+

I have ordered 2 of these laptops and both have the same problem -- they don't charge. The charging light (amber) goes on for 1 second and then turns off. What a shame. After resetting the battery via the power button as suggested in the Acer forum, the problem persists. Apparently this a known issue with the Acer 515-56 models. I am surprised Acer is allowed to sell a defective model like this. Save yourself the trouble of having to send it back and wait 2 weeks for a refund from Amazon

Overheated in hibernation mode. One day it wouldn't boot and it was red hot in HIBERNATE unpluged. Who would know? Used it only for streaming less than 2 hrs a day. Apparently a known issue per Acer site.....unbeknownst to be.... first purchase no issues. This was inferior. Contacted seller the offhanded me to Acer who doesn't reply. Seller won't reply. Guess they know.

This is a quality and safety issue. It could be a hazard you don't know about. Very concerning.
